The African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus)
PARROT DIET
Firstly I must say I have only fed my African Greys on this diet and have no knowledge of the dietary needs of other species of parrots.
In brief the main ingredients of this diet are dried pulses which need to be germinated over a period of 3 to 4 days until till they have sprouted. See www.babygreys.co.uk/picture-gallery.htm

STEP 1
Soak approx 6ozs of pulses in water for 24hrs
(along with Gem Sparkle water sanitizer). GEM SPARKLE A COMPLETELY ORGANIC WATER SANITIZER The product is 100% safe, chemical free & harmless to all birds Water hygiene is a cause for major concern as it represents the ideal medium for growth and contamination by, Fungi, Bacteria, Yeast After 24hrs wash and sieve the pulses and return to a clean container with NO WATER.

STEP 2
After a further 24hrs with the pulses in the clean container with no water, wash and sieve again. And place back in a clean container – again with no water.

STEP 3
Repeat step 2, you should now be able to see signs of the pulses sprouting. Please remember the sprouting times will be faster in the summer months and slower in winter. Ideally you should have 3 lots soaking at once, so as you use one replace it with a new batch and you should have a continuous supply of sprouted pulses. Should you finish up with too much sprouting seed, placed in the fridge they will be ok to feed 3 days later. However they will need to be rinsed and sieved every day – Step 2

HINTS AND TIPS.
On the day of feeding the sprouted pulses (after it has been rinsed and sieved), I add 2ozs of a good sunflower mix and 3 to 4 portions of fresh fruit and vegetables.
