The African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus)
FAQ's about African Grey Parrots
THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Question. Will my bird talk? Is a cock or a hen a better talker?
Answer. Your bird will talk but there is no set age for this happening. We have had birds say “ hello” at 10 weeks and we know of birds that have not talked for over a year. In our experience we have found no difference between a cock or hen when it comes to talking.
Question. Should I cover my bird at night?
Answer. Yes. Your parrot needs its peace and rest. It also stops your bird being in a draught over night, especially as most homes cool down in the early hours.
Question. Will my bird get on with other pets in the house?
Answer. Babies have been sold to people who have other pets and THEY have had no problems. Caution and supervision is recommended at all times.

Question. Should I have my birds wings clipped?
Answer. Personally we do not recommend clipping. It can be stressful for the bird and can cause behavioural problems. Clipping is not permanent as feathers will grow back in. You are also giving the bird a disability in as much that they cannot fly out of danger. Should your bird escape, contact The National Theft Register at the Parrot Society.co.uk
Question. What sex is it?
Answer. Sexing by shape, colour or posture in a Grey is not guaranteed.
Surgical sexing is 100% but can only be done by an Avian Vet,
DNA sexing is as near as 100% accurate.
Question. How old is the bird? (African Grey only.)
Answer. You can be certain you’re buying a baby if its entire eye is black. You should not be offered a bird that has not been fully weaned. This normally occurs at or about the 12week period.
Question. How long will it live?
Answer. Greys are normally long-lived. 30-40-50 years are not uncommon and longer have been well documented. They are not normally prone to disease (see Feeding).
African Grey Parrots Question. Can I bathe my Parrot?
Answer. Yes. Some take to it more readily than others. A dish of tepid water may be placed in the bottom of its cage (or on the floor with its favourite toys around the dish). Alternatively try one of the house plant sprays filled with warm water on a mist setting. We sell "shower perches" specifically designed for a parrot.

Question. How long can my parrot be out its cage?
Answer. All day long if it is supervised and has access to food and water. Please do remember that your bird will sleep/rest through the day.

Question. Does my bird need any injections?
Answer. No. An African Grey is not prone to any disease but they are very good at hiding illness. If you notice a change in your bird’s behaviour or eating habits, a trip to the vet is recommended.
